The project
In Cambridge's suburbs sits an attractive new development, designed to create a sense of community. The 208 assorted townhouses and apartments are formed into eight quads, focused around a central green space, and connected by tree-lined streets. The finished buildings are clad in timber and brick, subtle enough so as not to detract from the greenery.
The design
Our Kingspan TEK® structural insulated panel (SIPs) building system has been used to form the structural roof and walls, allowing the homes to reach the required levels of thermal efficiency, equivalent to Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Air leakage rates of below 1.5 air change per hour @ 50 pa were recorded for each building upon the project's completion. A mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system was used to create a steady supply of fresh air throughout the homes, helping to provide an energy-efficient way to heat each house in line with the development's ethos.
