The project
This project for a primary school was focused on build speed in order to deliver a new teaching facility in time for the start of the academic year. The offsite method of construction for Kingspan TEK®, our structural insulated panel offering, was ideally suited to executing this project within the required timeframe. It also enabled the new structure to reach the airtightness performance which had challenged similar more traditional build methods.
The design
Honington Primary School was part of Suffolk County Council's classroom extension programme that was rolled out across the county to provide additional teaching space for expanding primary schools. It was especially vital that the classroom was constructed to programme as a new influx of students were enrolling at the start of the new term. The structure was completed during term time so noise and pollution had to be kept to a minimum. This threw up some challenges, as the constructors were working within an active school in a small area. However, the offsite manufacturing process of our SIPs system was adapted to work within the confined space. Though the benefits of its offsite construction process became invaluable in the small space, the main driver behind using Kingspan TEK® was the speed of build and fabric performance. It ultimately enabled the project to be completed on time and to the required airtightness standard.
